New Mexico State is promoting Ghaali Muhammad-Lankford to offensive coordinator, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday.
Muhammad-Lankford joined the staff in 2022 as running backs coach, but will now transition to wide receivers in addition to coordinating the offense.
A source within the profession referred to Muhammad-Lankford as a "rising star" in coaching, adding "he's also one of the best humans you will ever meet."
The move is part of the shakeup following Jerry Kill's retirement last month. Wide receivers coach Tony Sanchez was promoted to head coach. Tim Beck served as the Aggies' offensive coordinator, but he has since taken the same job at Vanderbilt.
Muhammad-Lankford came to Las Cruces after three seasons as wide receivers coach at Illinois State, and two as the Redbirds' co-offensive coordinator. He spent 2016-18 as the wide receivers coach at Southeast Missouri State; 2018 was SEMO's best season in school history.
The 2023 campaign was one of the best in New Mexico State's history as well. The Aggies reached back-to-back bowl games for the first time since 1959-60; posted their first 6-game winning streak since 1960; won 10 games for the first time since 1960; defeated Auburn by 21 points as 23.5-point underdogs; and reached the Conference USA Championship.
Muhammad-Lankford played at Wyoming and started coaching in 2014 as a graduate assistant at Missouri.
