After losing tight ends coach / run game coordinator John Lilly last week to the Panthers, Mack Brown is replacing Lilly with a candidate that brings significant NFL experience.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Mack is set to bring Freddie Kitchens on staff as tight ends coach / run game coordinator.
Kitchens, who spent last season as a senior football analyst at South Carolina, previously served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns for one season in 2019.
He led the Browns to a 6-10 record in his lone season as head coach of the franchise, and earned the spot after serving as the team's offensive coordinator in 2018.
Prior NFL assistant coaching stops for Kitchens include with the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants.
The former Alabama quarterback's last on-field coaching role in college football came back in 2004-05 at Mississippi State, where he coached tight ends before moving to running backs.
As if hiring away from your rival isn't interesting enough, UNC opens their season this fall against South Carolina and the Gamecocks.
