Sources: Northern Michigan hiring D-III head coach as coordinator

Shane Richardson was able to return to his alma mater at Northern Michigan (D-II) as its new head coach back in late December, and has been focused on building out his staff.

We hear that Richardson is now preparing to make a few important additions on defense, including prying a current Division III head coach for his defensive coordinator role.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Finlandia (D-III - MI) head coach Mike DuFrane will be the Wildcats new defensive coordinator.

DuFrane spent the past two seasons leading the upstart program in Michigan's upper peninsula, who finished 0-10 last season.

He previously called the defenses at St. Scholastica (D-III - MN), Lyon College (NAIA - AR), and Marietta (D-III - OH) and spent time as an assistant at the small college level at Minnesota-Morris (D-III), Carthage (D-III - WI) and Dubuque (D-III - IA).

As a player, DuFrane helped lead UW-Whitewater to a national title and a runner-up finish as a defensive lineman.

In addition to DuFrane, sources also share that Richardson is adding Wheeling (D-II - WV) defensive line coach Mike Kaiser as the new defensive line coach.

Kaiser, who was part of Wheeling's 7-4 finish last season, also held additional titles as special teams coordinator and director of football operations for the Cardinals.
