Sources: Oregon hiring Tim DeRuyter as new defensive coordinator (Featured)

Sources shared with FootballScoop late Thursday evening that Mario Cristobal got his man.

Early on in his search for a defensive coordinator to replace Andy Avalos, sources shared with FootballScoop that Cristobal planned to speak with a number of candidates to hear ideas from some of the best available defensive minds; but that the one person he truly was hoping to hire was DeRuyter.

Avalos was named head coach at Boise State on January 9th.

Cal's defensive coordinator since 2017, DeRuyter has been calling defenses since the mid-90s when he did so for Ohio University at his second coaching job.

After completing his playing career at Air Force (linebacker), the California native would begin his coaching career there. He would go on to serve as defensive coordinator at Ohio, Navy, Air Force, Texas A&M, Fresno State and for these past four seasons at Cal.

Universally liked and respected within the profession, DeRuyter's hire is expected to be very well received by players, coaches and administrators.
