Sources: Big Ten coordinator stepping down (Rob Wenger)

Minnesota rush ends coach and special teams coordinator Rob Wenger is leaving the staff to pursue other opportunities, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.

Wenger departs after seven seasons on staff, encompassing the entire PJ Fleck tenure to date. He developed multiple players into All-Big Ten selections and NFL draft picks. Kicker Emmit Carpenter also left school as Minnesota's most accurate kicker ever.

A former linebacker and fullback at Colgate, he entered coaching as an operations assistant at Rutgers in 2008, then spent 2009 in player development. He moved between the high school and small college ranks until landing the special teams coordinator job at Western Michigan in 2013 with PJ Fleck.

Wenger was part of a staff that pieced together the best team in Western Michigan history, posting an undefeated regular season, a MAC championship and a Cotton Bowl appearance in 2016.
