Tulane is expected to hire Samford special teams coordinator Mike Krysl as a special teams analyst, sources told FootballScoop on Friday.
The relationship between Krysl and Green Wave head coach Willie Fritz stretches back close to two decades. Krysl played for Fritz at Central Missouri from 2005-07. Krysl moved into coaching as Fritz moved on to Sam Houston and later to Georgia Southern. In 2014, Fritz hired Krysl as his special teams coordinator.
"That’s kind of his baby,” Krysl said of learning special teams from Fritz 2019. “If he didn’t like being the head coach so much, he could probably go be a special teams coordinator in the NFL, if he wanted to.”
Georgia Southern's 2014 squad won the Sun Belt in their first year in the conference, and the 2015 team was the first to reach a bowl game at the FBS level.
From there, Krysl coordinated special teams at Samford (2016-17), Army (2018-19) and Samford again (2022), sandwiched around a 2-year stint as the special teams analyst at Arkansas (2020-21). In his first stint at Samford, Krysl helped the Bulldogs' punter and kicker earn All-SoCon honors while finishing eighth in FCS in net punting.
The Green Wave are coming off a season where they jumped from two wins to 12, won the American, defeated USC in the Cotton Bowl, and finished No. 9 in the AP poll, the second highest mark in program history. Special teams coordinator Robby Discher, a former FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year, took the same job at Illinois last month.
