Sources: Tarleton hiring Division II coordinator to coach quarterbacks (tarleton)

Tarleton is expected to hire Adam Austin as its quarterbacks coach, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.

Tarleton, located in Stephenville, Texas, is preparing for its first full-fledged season in FCS this fall.

Austin spent the 2019 campaign as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Kentucky. His one season in that position saw the Colonels lead the Ohio Valley Conference in rushing, red zone offense and ranked third in scoring at 30 points a game.

After one season at EKU, Austin joined the Garden City Community College staff in 2020 before then jumping to Missouri Southern as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach ahead of the '20 campaign. The Lions played just one game in 2020-21, a 21-20 win at Southern Nazarene back in March.

At Tarleton, Austin will join a staff where head coach Todd Whitten serves as his own play-caller and Jonathan Beasley (running backs/tight ends) and Scott Carey (offensive line) return as co-coordinators. Whitten's son Tate is the Texans' wide receivers coach, and Trey Carr III assists with the offensive line.

The Texans went 5-3 this spring in their transitional season from Division II to FCS. Tarleton will move to the newly-formed WAC this fall with reigning national champions Sam Houston, as well as Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Central Arkansas, Abilene Christian, and a non-conference game at Eastern Kentucky.

With Austin off to Texas, sources tell FootballScoop that associate head coach and offensive line coach Matt Rahl has been appointed the Lions' new offensive coordinator. Rahl is a 2001 MSSU graduate who returned to his alma mater in 2020 after two seasons at UTEP. Atiba Bradley, another MSSU grad, was named Missouri Southern's head coach in February.
