Sources: The Citadel promotes from within for offensive coordinator role (The Citadel Football)

The Citadel is expected to promote Lamar Owens to sole offensive coordinator in 2025, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday.

Owens, also the club's wide receivers coach, split coordinator duties with offensive line coach Patrick Covington in 2024, though Owens was the play-caller, sources say. Covington took the offensive line job at East Tennessee State earlier this month.

The Citadel's offensive numbers grew considerably as the team improved on its 0-11 2023 season to post a 5-7 mark in 2024 under third-year head coach Maurice Drayton: the Bulldogs gained nearly 60 more yards per game (260.4 to 319.8) and watched their rushing average grow from 123.4 yards per outing to 175.1.

Most importantly, the Bulldogs' scoring output doubled from an even 10 points a game in 2023 to 21.5 last season. The club posted 28 and 30 points in two of its final four outings.

The Citadel also limited its self-inflicted wounds in 2024, critical for any rebuilding team. The Bulldogs were 19th in FCS in tackles for loss allowed and 16th in offensive penalties.

Prior to The Citadel, Owens coached wide receivers at Georgia Southern and A-backs at Georgia Tech under Paul Johnson. He played quarterback under Johnson at Navy.
