Sources: Top FCS head coach to leave post to become Navy offensive coordinator (Brian Newberry)

Brian Newberry, after an difficult first year atop the Navy Midshipmen football program, is continuing his offseason staff overhaul.

Now, sources share with FootballScoop, Newberry is set for his next offensive play-caller.

Drew Cronic, who's led Mercer to 23 wins since 2021 and advanced into the second round of the 2023 FCS Playoffs, is poised to become Navy's next offensive play-caller, sources told FootballScoop Tuesday night.

After spending the 2017 season as Furman's offensive coordinator for Clay Hendrix, Cronic has reeled off an 53-20 record across the past six seasons as head coach at first NCAA Division II program Lenoir-Rhyne and then for the past four years at Mercer.

Cronic led L-R to back-to-back NCAA Division II Semifinals appearances before he advanced Mercer to the FCS Quarterfinals in 2023.

A former University of Georgia receiver who was a college teammate of Kirby Smart for the Bulldogs, Cronic has worked at James Madison, Reinhardt and West Georgia.

Navy finished Newberry's debut campaign at 5-7; after an 1-3 start, the Midshipmen finished a respectable 4-4 across the final eight games.
