UTSA is expected to hire veteran running backs coach Tommie Robinson to coach the position, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Saturday. Mike Craven of Dave Campbell's Texas Football first reported the news.
A former strong safety at Troy, Robinson is among the most experienced running backs coaches in the game today. He's manned the position for Utah State, Oklahoma State, Memphis, Miami, the Arizona Cardinals, USC, Texas, LSU, and Texas A&M. Robinson and Roadrunners head coach Jeff Traylor crossed paths on Charlie Strong's Texas staff in 2015, when Traylor was the Longhorns' special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.
Robinson won a national championship as LSU's 2019 staff, where he was also assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.
Robinson has been in the business since 1986, when he was an assistant at Woodham High School in Florida. In addition to his numerous running backs coaching posts, Robinson has also coached wide receivers for the Dallas Cowboys, TCU and Georgia Tech.
He spent 2024 on Deion Sanders's Colorado staff as director of quality control, and was set to return as assistant running backs coach before the UTSA opportunity presented itself. Former Roadrunners running backs coach Julian Griffin took the same job at Cal last month.
The 2025 season will be Traylor's sixth in San Antonio; he has led UTSA to a bowl game in all five previous seasons.
