The departure of offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen to become the new offensive line coach at Ohio State for the defending national champions left Brent Pry with a very attractive Power Four coordinator opening at Virginia Tech.
Sources tell FootballScoop Christian Taylor is among the finalists for the offensive play caller job for the Hokies.
The Athletic has reported Taylor is a target as well.
A final decision has not been made, but Taylor's recent experience on the defensive side of the ball in Buffalo, coupled with multiple successful spots as a play caller make him an attractive candidate.
Taylor is the former offensive coordinator at William & Mary (FCS - VA), where he had one of the most creative and efficient offenses in college football.
He left the FCS ranks after the 2023 season for his first opportunity to join an NFL franchise, and gained valuable experience on the defensive side of the ball the season working in a defensive quality control role.
Since making the jump from William & Mary (FCS - VA) to the NFL, sources have shared Taylor really enjoyed the way of life as a staff member for a Super Bowl contender, but the opportunity to call plays at a place like Virginia Tech was too good to pass up.
The opportunity in Blacksburg will mark the fourth opportunity as a play caller for Taylor, who has also called plays at Illinois Wesleyan (D-III) and San Diego (FCS - CA) in addition to William & Mary. His only other stop at the Power conference level came in 2011 at Michigan, where he was an offensive assistant.
He will be tasked with helping Pry and the Hokies break a two-year streak where they've hovered around .500, finishing 7-6 with a bowl win in 2023 before a 6-7 campaign last fall with a loss in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
Pry and the Hokies enter a critical fourth season sitting at 16-21 under his leadership.
