Newly hired West Georgia offensive coordinator Dane Stevens just might be the youngest play-caller in college football as UWG prepares for its transition to Football Championship Subdivision program.
Stevens is continuing the energetic, youth movement going in preparing to add David Whitlow as the Wolves' wide receivers coach, sources tell FootballScoop.
Stevens and Whitlow most recently spent the 2023 season working together at Ole Miss, where Stevens was a quality control coach/offensive analyst who also served as the Rebels's assistant quarterbacks coach. The Rebels under head coach Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlies Weis Jr. set several school records, most notably with their 11th win last weekend in the Peach Bowl.
Whitlow logged this past season at Ole Miss after he previously had served as graduate assistant under Bryan Harsin at Auburn in 2022.
A former Alabama State player, the 26-year-old Whitlow has deep ties throughout Alabama and around the South.
UWG is preparing to transition into FCS ball in the upcoming season; the Wolves are slated to compete in the United Athletic Conference, an amalgamation of multiple conferences that includes regular FCS Playoff contenders such as Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas, among others.
Last month, UWG hired former Mercer defensive coordinator Joel Taylor to serve as its next head coach.
The Wolves are scheduled to open their 2024 season Aug. 31 at home against Chris Hatcher's Samford Bulldogs.
