Southern Illinois promotes from within for defensive coordinator (Southern Illinois Football)

With DJ Vokolek off to Northwestern, Southern Illinois has promoted Antonio James to defensive coordinator.

James was gearing up for his second season as the Salukis' assistant head coach and defensive line coach.

Prior to joining the SIU staff, James spent 2018-21 as the defensive coordinator at Morgan State.

"This came out of the blue the day before training camp — but Coach Vokolek has to make decisions that are best for him and his family," head coach Nick Hill said. "Saluki football moves on, and I'm super-excited about . Antonio is on staff, is ready to do it, and is proven to do it at the FCS level. I think our guys will be excited to play for him."

James played at Illinois from 2006-09 and in 2017 was an AFCA 35 Under 35 honoree. He was also a Bill Walsh Coaching Fellow with the Chicago Bears this summer.

Special teams coordinator Gary McGraw has also been appointed safeties coach to cover Vokolek's absence.

Southern Illinois opens its season Sept. 2 against Austin Peay.
