Southern Miss interim head coach Scotty Walden has made his first two hires.
The Golden Eagles on Monday announced the hirings of former Cincinnati head coach Rick Minter and former Division III head coach Scott Highsmith to the staff. Both will serve as analysts.
Minter is best known for his 1994-03 run as Cincinnati's head coach, when the Bearcats and Golden Eagles were bunk mates in Conference USA. He went 53-63-1 with four bowl games as Cincinnati's head coach.
Since then, Minter worked most commonly as a defensive coordinator, running defenses at South Carolina, Notre Dame, Kentucky and, most recently, Florida Tech and the AAF's Birmingham Iron.
“He has a wealth of knowledge,” Walden said. “But it’s not only about that. He’s a great person. I was looking for a guy, a veteran type of coach that can impart wisdom on our staff and give us perspective.”
Highsmith served as the head coach at Belhaven University and East Texas Baptist, where he worked over followed Walden. He has also been Kentucky's wide receivers coach and Southeastern Louisiana's offensive coordinator.
Southern Miss, 1-3 on the season, was off this weekend. USM visits UTEP on Saturday.
