Saint Augustine University has fired head coach Howard Feggins, the school announced Friday.
Saint Augustine is an HBCU located in Raleigh, N.C. The Falcons compete in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in Division II.
SAU's announcement did not include a reason why Feggins was released six games into his first season, but WNCN-TV in Raleigh reports it's because an ineligible player played in the Falcons' Sept. 16 game against Virginia State.
The player, who was not named, appeared in three snaps.
The Falcons are off to an 0-6 start to Feggins's first, and only, season. SAU has been held to seven points or fewer five times; in the sixth game, coincidentally against Virginia State, St. Augustine scored a season-high 12 points, but allowed a season-high of 55.
Defensive coordinator Jody Owens has been named interim head coach. Owens is in his first season on staff, with previous experience as the co-defensive coordinator at Pittsburg State and as an offensive assistant with the Carolina Panthers.
