Yesterday it was shared that the Bucs were interviewing Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen for their offensive coordinator job.
This morning, NFL Network is sharing that Tampa Bay is working on a deal to bring Coen in as the team's new offensive play caller.
Once finalized, the move would mark the second time that Coen has left Kentucky after one season for the NFL.
He previously served as Mark Stoops' offensive coordinator in Lexington for the 2021 season, where he helped lead the program to a 10-win season, before heading back to the LA Rams as their offensive coordinator.
After one season in LA under Sean McVay as offensive coordinator, he returned to Kentucky as offensive coordinator this past fall and drastically improved an offense that ranked last in the SEC prior to his return.
The Bucs lost Dave Canales after one season of brilliant work with Baker Mayfield revamping the offense, as Canales left for the head coaching opportunity with the Panthers.
Many of the candidates that the Bucs brought in for coordinator interviews had previous experience working with Mayfield whether in LA or Cleveland (Alex Van Pelt), in addition to a few internal candidates that received consideration.
Though brief, the move would mark a second time that Coen has worked with Mayfield, as the Rams signed him off waivers for the last five games of the 2022 season when Coen was in LA.
For Mark Stoops, he's set to embark on his fourth offensive coordinator search in the past five seasons at Kentucky. After parting ways with Eddie Gran after the 2020 season, he's had Coen (2021), Rich Scangarello (2022), Coen (2023) call the offense, and may soon have an opening on his hands to fill again.
