Tennessee Titans announce new staff structure, place GM Ran Carthon in charge (Tennessee Titans Football Staff)

The Tennessee Titans formally announced Brian Callahan as their next head coach on Wednesday, but that wasn't the most significant announcement to come out of Nashville.

General manager Ran Carthon has seen his role and his title -- he's now executive VP/general manager -- to place him in charge of all football activities.

Per the team's announcement, Carthon will oversee: roster control, team activities and personnel decisions including draft and free agency acquisitions, oversight of Callahan and his coaching staff, scouting, sports medicine, and player engagement.

"Over the past year, Ran has impressed me and our staff with his innovative approach to roster building," said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. "Ran's exceptional reputation around the league as a talent evaluator and culture builder was a clear competitive advantage during last year's free agency and draft process, as well as our recent search for a head coach. Simply put, Ran Carthon makes the Tennessee Titans a destination for the league's top talent. By expanding his role to include full roster control and oversight of the coaching staff, our organization will now benefit more completely from Ran's unique ability to build and lead a championship-caliber football team."

The 2023 campaign was Carthon's first as the team's GM.

The 42-year-old is one of the select few former players now in charge of an NFL team's personnel. He spent the previous six years under another former player, serving director of pro personnel and director of player personnel under John Lynch with the San Francisco 49ers.

Carthon played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2004-06, and joined the personnel business as a pro scout for the Atlanta Falcons in 2008. He is the son of 2-time Super Bowl champion running back and longtime assistant coach Maurice Carthon.

In addition to Carthon's promotion, Chad Brinker has been promoted to president of football operations. His newly-created post will oversee salary cap management, analytics, communications and information systems, and team operations.

"In this new role, Chad will blend his executive experience with his strengths in football and scouting to ensure our football operation continues to innovate and grow as new opportunities emerge," Adams Strunk said. "Chad's oversight of these areas will allow Ran to focus his full attention and energy on building and leading a championship football team."
