Update >> The school has now announced a change in football leadership, effective immediately.
Athletic director Ross Bjork shared the following:
"After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President Welsh and then Chancellor Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision. We appreciate coach Fisher's time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."
Texas A&M is moving to fire Jimbo Fisher, according to multiple reports on Sunday.
The decision was initiated during an A&M board of regents meeting on Thursday, following last week's loss to Ole Miss.
More meetings are scheduled for Sunday, and a formal decision could be in place by day's end.
Fisher is 45-25 (27-21 SEC) in six-plus seasons at Texas A&M, but only 7-12 in his last 19 games against Power 5 opponents, and two years removed from his last road victory. After a 9-4 debut season of 2018 that saw Texas A&M ranked No. 16, Texas A&M has only won nine games and finished in the AP Top 25 once, in the pandemic-shortened season of 2020.
Texas A&M went 5-7 last season, and sits at 6-4 following Saturday's 51-10 win over Mississippi State.
For reference, Texas A&M fired Kevin Sumlin for going 51-26 and 25-23 in SEC play.
The Jimbo Era at Texas A&M is best known for the massive contracts the Aggies offered to get him to College Station. Fisher signed a fully guaranteed 10-year, $75 million contract upon leaving Florida State, then signed an extension ahead of the 2021 season that kept him under contract through 2031 at $9 million per year, again fully guaranteed. His buyout is believed to be $76 million.
Pete Thamel adds that assistant head coach / co-defensive coordinator / defensive line coach Elijah Robinson will serve as interim head coach.
One of five active coaches to win a national championship, Texas A&M system chancellor John Sharp celebrated Fisher's hiring by presenting him with a national championship plaque with the years left blank. It appears the years will remain blank, as A&M moves to remove Fisher before starting over with someone else.
BREAKING: Per multiple sources, Texas A&M set to part ways with Jimbo Fisher as early as today.
