Texas was going to extend Steve Sarkisian anyway following a breakthrough season that saw his Longhorns win the Big 12 for the first time since 2009 and reach their first College Football Playoff, but the timing of Nick Saban's retirement sure didn't hurt.
Saban retired Jan. 10 and Alabama hired Kalen DeBoer two days later, but just before the crimson smoke came puffing out of Bryant-Denny Stadium, Texas let the world know that Sark wasn't going anywhere.
And now we know how much they're paying him not to go anywhere.
After signing a 6-year, $34.2 million deal upon taking the job, Sark is now under contract through the next for the next seven years at $74.2 million. He'll be paid $10.3 million in 2024, with a $100,000 annual raise through the end of the deal, which expires in 2030. He's also eligible for up to $1.85 million per year in bonuses.
The terms of his original contract paid Sarkisian $5.6 million in 2023 with a raise to $5.8 million this year.
Texas also extended and raised Sark's senior assistants.
Assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Banks is under contract through 2026, starting at $1.15 million this year with $50,000 annual raises.
Offensive coordinator Kyle Flood is under contract for the next three seasons as well, starting at $1.325 million with $75,000 annual raises.
Finally, defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski is also under contract through 2026. The highest-paid coach on staff, he'll earn $1.8 million in 2024 with $100,000 annual raises.
All contracts are pending final approval from the UT Board of Regents, which meets Wednesday and Thursday.
