Texas Southern to make head coaching change (Clarence McKinney)

Texas Southern will not renew the contract of head coach Clarence McKinney, the school announced Monday.

"Texas Southern University will not renew the contract of head football coach Clarence McKinney when it expires on Dec. 15, 2023," said AD Dr. Kevin Granger. "We wish Coach McKinney well moving forward. The University will begin a nationwide search for our next head coach immediately."

The move has been in the works for some time now. McKinney indicated he knew last Saturday's game would be his last as Texas Southern's head coach following Saturday's 35-34 loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

"I appreciate this opportunity. I don't take for granted to be the head coach of Texas Southern University Tigers," McKinney said. "Growing up in the neighborhood, always hearing the band as a kid. Coming over and playing on the field during those times I was a kid, and playing a little tackle football. It's a special moment for me to be the head coach at TSU."

The Houston native spent five seasons at TSU, going 12-35. The Tigers went 3-8 this fall, and peaked with a 5-6 mark in 2022.

McKinney is a fixture in the Houston football scene. His career began as an assistant at Houston's Booker T. Washington before moving to Galena Park North Shore in 2003. He moved to the college ranks as the running backs coach on Kevin Sumlin's Houston staff in 2008, then joined Sumlin at Texas A&M in 2012.

McKinney was Sumlin's assistant head coach and running backs coach at Arizona before taking the Texas Southern job.
