Rose-Hulman (D-III - IN) and Illinois College had a battle for the ages over the weekend, taking their game into three overtimes and scoring a total of 146 points between the two of them.
The point total tied the previous Division III scoring record, which took place in 2007 between Hartwick and Utica. That game ended in a 72-70 four-overtime battle.
As you might expect in such a high scoring affair, both teams went well over the 100 offensive play mark. Illinois College finished the day with 117 plays, while Rose-Hulman had 114, and the rest of the stat sheet follows that same neck-and-neck trend in nearly every statistical category.
Illinois College quarterback Michael Bates attempted 73 passes, completing 42 of them for 535 yards and 6 touchdowns (no interceptions), while also rushing for 91 yards. Rose Hulman quarterback Austin Swenson went 37-59 for 603 with 7 touchdowns and a pick (and completed passes to 8 different guys) and teammate Greg Lee had 30 rushes for 162 and two touchdowns.
Those are quite the stat lines.
The actual drive chart (courtesy of D3Football.com) is every bit as ridiculous as you'd think it would be.
Illinois College will surely enjoy their bye week this weekend, followed next weekend by a trip up to St. Norbert, and Rose-Hulman will be traveling to Hanover this weekend.
Something tells me that both defensive coordinators are glad this game is behind them.
