Back in February, following a disappointing season offensively for the Iowa Hawkeyes, the program announced a reworked contract for offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz.
The new amendments to his contract dropped his pay from $900,000 annually to $850,000 for the 2023 season, and to keep his rolling two-year deal now requires the team to average at least 25 points per game this fall and win at least 7 games.
Failure to meet those objectives means that his contract will end on June 30th, 2024.
If Iowa is able to hit those standards, he would be eligible to receive a one-time lump sum bonus of $112,500 and his salary would get bumped to $925,000 for the 2024 season.
The reworked deal comes after the Hawkeyes finished second-to-last nationally with just 20 points per game in 2022, and they were marginally better in 2021, finishing 99th in scoring offense.
With the opening weekend of college football upon us, it goes without saying that a lot of eyes will be on the Iowa offense each week, so we're rolling out our first FootballScoop Contract Tracker to keep up on the progress of the Ferentz and the Hawkeye offense.
The Hawkeyes opened up the season against Utah State earlier today at home at Kinnick, and finished the night with 24 points on the board.
The game started with fireworks, as Iowa scored on the second play of the game, and then followed that up with a touchdown on their second series as well.
Their next three possessions ended with no points before they kicked a field goal to end the first half.
In the second half they punched one more touchdown in to finish their scoring on the day. Outside of that, and their final possession of the game, they ended every other possession of the second half with a punt.
Every year teams make big strides from one season to the next, so maybe Utah State's defense was much improved from their 105th finish nationally last season when they gave up over 30 points per game, we will have to wait and see how the rest of the season plays out.
The Hawkeyes travel to Ames for a rivalry game next week, then take on Western Michigan at home before their Big Ten slate begins with a trip to Penn State.
The end of their schedule features home games in four of their last five contests.
