Update: Gus Malzahn has announced the move, and offensive coordinator Tim Harris, Jr., will take over offensive play-calling duties. Co-defensive coordinator Addison Williams will now take over the defense, and linebackers coaching duties remain unassigned at this time.
Ted Roof will not return as UCF's defensive coordinator Gus Malzahn announced Monday.
The move comes two days after the Knights fell 37-24 to No. 11 BYU, the club's fifth straight loss.
UCF is allowing 27.1 points per game, 86th nationally, and ranks 72nd in the country at 5.55 yards per play.
Roof, 60, was in his first season as UCF's defensive coordinator after spending the past two seasons in the same role at Oklahoma. Roof has also coordinated defenses at UMass, Western Carolina, Duke, Minnesota, Auburn, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Appalachian State, and Vanderbilt. This was his second stint at UCF's defensive coordinator.
At 3-5 on the season, UCF will need to win three of its final four games to reach the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. The Knights host Arizona on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, FS1).
At a press conference Monday, Malzahn added that Tim Harris Jr will take over as the offensive play caller for the Knights.
