New Duke head coach Manny Diaz has offered Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons his running backs coach job in Durham, FootballScoop sources can confirm.
However, sources told FootballScoop Friday that Florida A&M has asked Simmons for the weekend to put together a contract competitive enough to keep him.
Simmons is one of the most successful coaches in FCS, and FAMU would very much like to keep him.
In six seasons on the job, Simmons is 45-13 overall and 32-5 in SWAC play. The 2023 campaign was Simmons' best; the Rattlers went 12-1 (losing only to South Florida, by 14 points), beat Prairie View A&M 35-14 for the SWAC title, and defeated Howard 30-26 in the Celebration Bowl.
A decision is expected by Monday.
