Fitting squarely in the "least they could do" category, Virginia Tech announced Tuesday evening it will rename its football locker room after program patriarch Frank Beamer.
“The heart and soul of Virginia Tech football resides within the young men who will use this locker room,” Beamer said. “The locker room is a place where lifelong friendships form and teams grow stronger together. While this space will always belong to our student-athletes and Hokie Nation, if my name helps remind our student-athletes to give that extra effort on the field, study a little longer or do a good turn for a fellow Hokie, then I’m all for it.
The locker room is not the only bit of the Virginia Tech athletics complex bearing Beamer's name. Last August the Hokies renamed Spring Road to Beamer Way, and the official address of VT athletics now sits at 25 Beamer Way, in honor of Beamer's jersey number as a Hokies player.
Beamer retired last fall after 29 seasons and 238 victories as Virginia Tech's head coach.
