Virginia Tech to hire NFL assistant, former FCS coordinator to run defense (Brent Pry)

Virginia Tech is expected to hire Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes as its new defensive coordinator, ESPN reported Monday.

Siefkes has been the Cardinals' linebackers coach the past two seasons. Prior to that, Siefkes was the Minnesota Vikings assistant linebackers coach.

Siefkes spent the first decade of his career at the college level. He was Wofford's defensive coordinator from 2018-20. In both of his seasons on campus (Wofford did not play in 2020), the Terriers led the conference in total defense, ranked in the top two in scoring defense, and won the Southern Conference championship.

Prior to Wofford, Siefkes coordinated the defense at Wisconsin-Platteville from 2016-17 and spent 2015 as a graduate assistant under Dave Aranda at Wisconsin. He was also a quality control at Florida International and a student assistant at UW-La Crosse.

Virginia Tech finished 48th nationally in yards per play and 39th in scoring in 2024. Defensive coordinator Chris Marve was not retained after three season, and head coach Brent Pry is 16-21 (6-7 in 2024) in three seasons on the job.
