Washington State has made a change at defensive coordinator

Jeff Schmedding will not return as the defensive coordinator on Jake Dickert's staff at Washington State.

The school announced the move today as Schmedding recently completed his second season on staff.

After winning eight of their first nine games, the Cougars ended their season on a three-game losing streak where they lost by a combined 7 points during that three-game stretch.

All those end of season losses were in tight games, losing to 38-35 to New Mexico, then 41-38 to Oregon State before their 15-14 loss to Wyoming on Saturday.

In his first year on The Palouse, Schmedding's defensive unit led the nation in defensive touchdowns with five.

This year, the Cougars allowed 28 points per game (90th nationally), 174 yards per game on the ground (96th nationally), and 255 yards passing per game (117th nationally).

Before joining Dickert's staff at Wazzu, Schmedding spent two seasons at Auburn, where he started off as assistant head coach and linebackers coach before being elevated to defensive coordinator in 2022.

He has previous experience coordinating a top defense at the FCS level, spending a total of 15 seasons at Eastern Washington in a variety of roles, including special teams coordinator.
