The Friday Night Lights of Texas hold a special mystique, but Friday night saw a feat I'm not sure has ever happened in the Lone Star State -- or anywhere.
With the score tied at 35-35 and just over a minute remaining, Pearland Dawson faced a fourth down at the Pearland 13-yard line. So Dawson head coach Eric Wells turned to his kicker: Claire Jeffress who happened to be the Homecoming Queen.
"Claire is something โ she just doesn't get rattled," Wells told the Houston Chronicle. "There wasn't even a question that she was going to kick it."
Jeffress told the paper her range extends to 33 yards, and the 30-yard boot snuck over the crossbar to give Dawson a 38-35 win over Pearland's namesake school.
Jeffress connected on all five extra point attempts leading up to that kick and also nailed a 25-yard extra point to secure a 14-13 win over Richmond George Ranch two weeks ago.
"I just wanted to do what I've always done and not think of it as any big deal," Jeffress said. "My team had faith in me, and they were going to block for me, and the snap and the hold were going to be good, so I just had to do my job."
