Willie Fritz and Houston are making a coordinator change (Kevin Barbay)

Head coach Willie Fritz has announced a coaching change at Houston.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay has been relieved of his duties.

Stepping into the interim offensive coordinator role will be quarterbacks coach / passing game coordinator Shawn Bell.

"We are grateful to Kevin for his dedication and contributions to our football program this season," Fritz shared in the school's release. "As we continue to assess every aspect of our program, it is clear we have not met our offensive standards. Kevin and his family have been wonderful members of our community, and we wish them nothing but success in the future. Our focus is on finishing the season strong Saturday against BYU. A national search for our next Offensive Coordinator will begin immediately."

Barbay is the former offensive play caller at Central Michigan, Appalachian State, and Mississippi State.

His stock as a play caller skyrocketed while at Appalachian State where his game plan against Texas A&M led to a big upset of the Aggies during the 2022 season.

However, his stops in Starkville and Houston have not replicated that success.

The change comes as the Houston offense ranks dead last nationally in scoring offense at 13.6 points per game.

Bell, a former AFCA 35 Under 35 selection, steps in as the offensive play caller for the first time in his career. The successful former Texas high school coach at Magnolia West and Cedar Ridge joined Matt Rhule's Baylor staff in 2017 as an offensive analyst before going on to coach the offensive line, tight ends, and quarterbacks through last fall. This marked his first season on the Houston staff.

The Coogs season finale is this weekend against BYU this week as they look to improve on their 4-7 record.
