Wisconsin cancels second straight game (Featured)

Wisconsin's game with Purdue, scheduled for this Saturday, will not happen, the program announced Tuesday.

This will be the second straight game the Badgers will miss, after last week's date with Nebraska was not playing due to an abundance of positive tests within Wisconsin's program.

Neither game will be made up, putting Wisconsin on the brink of becoming ineligible for the Big Ten championship. The conference's bylaws for this season state teams must play in at least six games to become eligible for the conference title, assuming the other teams in their division average eight games. (Wisconsin could still play in the B1G title game with five games if the average of Big Ten West teams falls below eight games.)

"I share in the disappointment of our student-athletes and staff," AD Barry Alvarez said. "We have seen a level of improvement in our testing numbers, but not enough to give us confidence to resume normal activities and play our game on Saturday. We will continue to test regularly, take the proper health-related precautions and look forward to getting our team back on the field as soon as possible."

The latest update said Wisconsin has recorded 21 positive tests over the last seven days, and five over the last three days. The program reports 27 active cases inside the program -- 15 players and 12 staff members.

Wisconsin's next scheduled game is against Michigan on Nov. 14. Wisconsin will provide another status report on Saturday.

Ironically, Wisconsin played in the first game of the Big Ten season. The Badgers hammered Illinois 45-7 in a Friday night affair, where Graham Mertz completed 20-of-21 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns in his first start.
