WWE legend Goldberg shares Deion Sanders fight story, talks son's path to Colorado

Goldberg, Coach Prime were NFL teammates together at the Atlanta Falcons

Before he became ‘Goldberg,’ eventually WWE Hall of Fame wresler, he simply was a rugged defensive tackle who squeaked into the 11th round of the then-12-round 1990 NFL Draft.

A couple of years later, he was teammates in the NFL with Deion Sanders on the Atlanta Falcons.

Now, Goldberg is telling stories on Coach Prime as he his own son, Gage, prepares to begin his collegiate career as a linebacker for the Colorado Buffaloes, entering their second year with Deion Sanders at the helm.

“We played together, ran a punt back, they hit me out of bounds; Goldberg was my dog, they didn’t understand who Goldberg was going to become, but we already knew,” Sanders says on a video shot by his son, Deion Sanders Jr. “He ran from one end of the sideline to the other end and slammed the cat.”

Adds Goldberg, “And I got fined $10,000, which was basically three of my checks. When he was making that every 15 seconds, but that showed you it doesn’t matter who you are or what you are, it matters what you stand for. He was my brother, and he’ll always be my brother and I’m always there for me.”

Sanders, billing himself as Atlanta’s version of Don King for his promotion of locker room wrestling matches on Fridays before their weekend games, is transitioning his Buffaloes into their second summer conditioning program following last week’s team retreat.

Goldberg says he finds comfort in sending his son to play for Coach Prime.

“All I can say is, I love him like a brother and now he’s taking care of my boy,” Goldberg says. “There’s no other defining way I can describe it except that my son is going to school under Deion Sanders. And I couldn’t be more appreciative and blessed, because this is one of the best human beings that God ever built.”

While that’s the message of love, Colorado’s athletics director, Rick George, is sharing a message of the Buffaloes against everyone.

“My dream and my goal for you is 12-7-24,” George tells players as they gather inside the Colorado team room. “Everybody know what that date is? The Big 12 Championship game. Because that Big 12 Championship game, when we win it, gives us an opportunity to compete for it all. And that’s why all of you are here today. That’s why all of you decided to come here, was to win a championship.

“The only ones that are for you are in this room, in this building and our fan base. Everybody else is against you.”
