North Carolina parting ways with Mack Brown (North Carolina)

Just yesterday, Mack Brown stood in front of reporters and said he intends to return to lead the team next fall.

Today, the school formally announced he won't get that opportunity.

North Carolina announced today their decision to dismiss the 73-year old Hall of Famer.

He will coach the team in their season finale agains tNC State, and a decision on whether he will coach in a bowl game has not yet been made.

In his second stint leading the Tar Heels, Mack has the team at 6-5.

They started the year 3-0 before a four-game losing streak that included an embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison.

They recovered to win three straight against Virginia, Florida State and Wake Forest before losing last week to Boston College in a lopsided 41-21 affair.

North Carolina's move marks the first Power Four coaching opening this cycle.

He has spent 35 seasons as a head coach with stops at Appalachian State, Tulane, Texas and UNC and holds the honor of being the winningest and longest tenured football coach in Tar Heels history.

Assuming Brown isn't a head coach again, he leaves college football. with a 288-154-1 record with 158 of those wins coming as the head coach at Texas, where he led the Longhorns to the 2005 National Title.

Steve Berkowitz points out that Brown will be owed a buyout of just over $2.8 million. The school is due an offset if Mack were to take a coaching or admin job for any college or pro team.
