Larry Kindbom has led the Washington University (D-III - St. Louis, MO) football program to impressive heights in his 31 years as head coach of the program.
Yesterday, coach Kindbom announced that 2019 will be his last season, and he will retire at the conclusion of the year.
Kindbom has collected 214 wins in his head coaching career, good for 5th among active Division III head coaches, and ranks in the top 25 in Division III history in wins, and 66th all time in college football in wins.
At WashU in particular, Kindbom is 186-116 overall heading into this last season and is the winningest head coach in school history. He's also developed 33 All-Americans, captured 13 conference titles, and made the NCAA playoffs twice since 2013.
"Washington University has been my home and family for over 30 years," Kindbom shared in the school's release, who also notes that he has had 61 of his former players enroll in medical school.
"What I have learned is that my total focus is dedicated to the next play and the next play, so my thoughts are in preparation for our upcoming opponent. At some point, I will have time to reflect back to my time here."
WashU joined one of the toughest small college leagues in the country last year in the CCIW (full of perennial powers like Wheaton, North Central and Illinois Wesleyan), and he led the program to an 8-2 mark.
The next head coach at WashU will have some very big shoes to fill, as Kindbom is well regarded in the profession as a man of integrity and someone who has built his program the right way.
Here's to wishing his final team in 2019 all the best.
