Jackson Prep (MS) head coach Ricky Black has had a 40-year career as a head coach where he's dominated while establishing himself as the one of the winningest active head coaches in Mississippi.
But his run is coming to an end, as sources share with FootballScoop that Black has decided to retire. A few local reports have confirmed the news.
This past fall, Black added to his legacy in winning his 400th game as a head coach. He became only the second head coach in state history to reach the milestone.
At the time of that 400th victory, Black was among the top 20 active high school coaches in wins.
In his first head coaching stop, at Kosciusko HS (MS), Black won an incredible 89% of his games. Then, at Tupelo HS he went on to win nearly 75% of his games. At Jackson Prep, Black has captured 13 state titles, including a state record 7-straight from 2012-18.
Black, who is in his early 70's, won the National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year honor in 2018 and was inducted in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
Outside of six seasons as an assistant at Mississippi State from 1991-96 under Jackie Sherrill, Black spent his entire coaching career at the high school level.
