One move has triggered changes at two Division III schools.
Ferrum College has announced the hiring of Cleive Adams, who until today was the head coach at Averett University.
With Adams gone, Averett announced the promotion of Patrick Henry as its new head coach. Henry spent the past eight years at Averett as the Cougars' offensive coordinator.
Both moves were announced Monday.
Averett went 21-9 over the past three seasons, a string of success that led to Adams' hiring at Ferrum and Henry's subsequent promotion. Adams is a Ferrum College graduate.
"I am excited to welcome Cleive Adams back to Ferrum as our new head football coach," said Ferrum AD John Sutyak. "It was critical that we identified someone who is of high character, that can positively mentor our current and future football student-athletes and who not only knows Ferrum, but embraces who we are and can effectively recruit and retain high level students and football players to the college. Cleive fits those traits and has a proven record of success in his tenure as the head coach at Averett. We are excited that he will be leading the Black Hats into the future and work toward our ultimate goal of competing for the ODAC championship."
"We are thrilled to name Patrick Henry as our new football head coach," Averett AD Meg Stevens said. "Coach Henry has proven his loyalty to Averett having been here for more than eight years. As the assistant head coach since 2015, Coach Henry is ready to take on the role of head coach. We are excited to see what new heights the program can reach under his leadership."
Adams replaces Rob Grande, who left March 4 to become an executive offensive analyst at Iowa State.
"It's an absolute honor to be named Head Football Coach at Ferrum," said Adams. "To be a part of a program with such a rich tradition represents an awesome opportunity. I'm looking forward to a new beginning with my alma mater and a productive partnership with the Ferrum Athletics department and campus community."
Henry had actually been on Averett's staff two years prior to Adams's hiring.
"I am thankful to Coach Adams for becoming my mentor, allowing me to grow and putting me in position to accept this challenge," Henry said.
