Phil Parker has won the 2023 Broyles Award, it was announced Tuesday.
Parker's defense has for years carried Iowa football, and in 2023 he was honored as the nation's top assistant coach.
Iowa was one of two units to surrender less than four yards per play. The Hawkeyes boasted a top five unit in scoring (13.2 points per game) and passing efficiency (100.46), and led the nation with only 18 plays of 20-plus yards allowed over the course of 13 games.
The 2023 campaign marked the second straight year Iowa has permitted less than four yards per play, and the sixth straight season in which the Hawkeyes ranked in the top 15 in that metric.
In 12 seasons running the Iowa defense, Parker's units have never allowed more than 25.6 points per game, and are now on a string of nine straight seasons allowing less than 21 points per game. All while getting very little support from Iowa's offense.
Finalists for the award were Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, and Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein.
The nation's top assistant coach resides in Iowa City.
