Charlie Strong's South Florida Bulls closed out their season 4-8 with last night's 34-7 loss to UCF.
The whisper in the profession the past few weeks was that director of athletics Michael Kelly had been pulling for Strong's team to create some wins down the stretch to avoid having to make a change, but those wins did not come.
Kelly has made the decision to part ways with Charlie Strong. Dan Wolken of USA Today was first to report the news.
"I would like to thank Coach Strong and his staff for their hard work and contributions to our program," Kelly said. "I have tremendous respect for Coach Strong and his dedication to recruiting and developing young men of talent and character and leading them with integrity. He has represented USF with dignity and class and we wish Coach and his family the very best.
"I met with our student-athletes and staff today to inform them of my decision and to make clear USF's commitment to a championship-caliber football program that recruits and develops student-athletes and provides the resources and support for them to achieve great success in competition, in the classroom and in the community."
After going 15-2 vs. FBS opponents through his first season and a half, Strong went just 3-14 thereafter. 10 wins, 7 wins, 4 wins was not a good trend.
Strong, 59, was previously the head coach at Louisville and Texas, and prior to that won two national championships as a senior member on Urban Meyer's staff at Florida.
