Willie Taggart has already had to fill a defensive coordinator and co-offensive coordinator opening, and it looks like another one of his co-coordinators may be on the move.
Pete Thamel tweets this afternoon that FAU assistant Drew Mehringer is leaving Florida Atlantic for a similar role at New Mexico.
With the Owls, Mehringer held the co-offensive coordinator title along with coaching the tight ends. At New Mexico, the report states that he will work with the quarterbacks and share the offensive coordinator title with Derek Warehime. The two previously worked together as assistants at Texas where Warehime mentored the offensive line.
Mehringer previously worked on Tom Herman's staff at Texas and Houston with the wide receivers.
Back in 2016 at Rutgers, at age 28, Mehringer was the youngest play caller at the Power Five level.
Earlier stops for him along his coaching journey include Rice, Iowa State, Ohio State, and James Madison before going to Houston, Rutgers, Texas, and FAU. Back in 2014, James Madison was the last time Mehringer has worked with the quarterbacks from the looks of it.
Earlier this year, FAU and co-offensive coordinator Clint Trickett parted ways (and Trickett has made his way from ULM to Marshall this off season) and then Jim Leavitt left FAU for SMU, and Taggart hired defensive coaching veteran Mike Stoops to fill the vacancy.
