Frank Wilson will not return at UTSA, the school has announced. The news was first reported by Stadium's Brett McMurphy.
“I want to thank Coach Wilson for his efforts on behalf of the football program and the university, and for his commitment to his student-athletes,” AD Lisa Campos said. "As only the second head coach in our history, Coach Wilson continued to build on the foundation of a young football program and we are grateful for his contributions to UTSA.”
Hired away from LSU in the winter of 2015, Wilson appeared to have the fledgling Roadrunner program primed to join the upper echelon of Conference USA after reaching the New Mexico Bowl in 2016 -- UTSA went 3-9 under Larry Coker in 2015 -- and 6-5 (including a win over Baylor) in 2017. But that proved to be the peak of Wilson's four years, as UTSA slipped to 3-9 in 2018 and 4-8 this fall, closing with three straight losses.
UTSA's four wins this season came over FCS Incarnate Word, 1-win UTEP, a Rice team that had no wins at the time and 1-win Old Dominion, the latter two by one score.
UTSA is still an incredibly young program, having played its first game in 2011 and joining Conference USA in 2013.
“While decisions like this are never easy, Campos said, “it is important that we take the steps that will help us build for the future and keep UTSA Athletics a vital part of the community. There is so much to look forward to as we continue to position our program to compete at the highest level.
“We will use a search firm and immediately begin a national search for UTSA’s next head football coach.”
A decorated recruiter, Wilson will have no trouble finding work as an assistant should he choose to go that route.
