Jim Harbaugh is facing a Level I violation for "providing false or misleading information" to NCAA investigators, according to a report Wednesday from the Detroit News.
The charge is part of a Notice of Allegations given to Michigan on Wednesday, stemming from the NCAA's investigation of the Wolverines allegedly violating COVID-era recruiting restrictions.
Michigan is accused of meeting with recruits during that time. Harbaugh famously claimed he just met for a cheeseburger; the NCAA claims that was false or misleading.
As part of the NCAA jurisprudence process, Michigan has 90 days to respond.
Michigan is also under investigation for the Connor Stalions sign stealing scandal, but the NCAA has yet to provide a NOA.
Harbaugh served a 3-game suspension to open the 2023 season as a self-imposed punishment for the COVID recruiting investigation, but it remains to be seen if the NCAA will view that as sufficient. A Level I violation is the most serious in the NCAA rule book.
“I’ve heard people comment it’s a slap on the wrist — it’s more like a baseball bat to the kneecaps or to the shoulder,” Harbaugh said of the suspension back in August.
In the meantime, No. 1 Michigan is preparing to face No. 4 Alabama in a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
