Tuscaloosa continues to be the landing spot for former FBS head coaches wanting to learn, improve, and that want to do everything in their power to prepare for another shot at being a college head coach again.
According to a report from AL.com late last night, that trend will continue in 2019 as former Houston coach Major Applewhite is set to join the staff in an analyst role. Applewhite's name is already up on the school's directory.
Applewhite and Houston parted ways after two full seasons and a 15-11 mark back in late December following a blowout 14-70 loss to Army in the Armed Forces Bowl just eight days earlier.
Over the course of the off season, Applewhite's name had been mentioned for some Power 5 offensive coordinator positions, including Miami, but nothing materialized.
Back in 2007, the former Texas Longhorns standout quarterback went from offensive coordinator at Rice to offensive coordinator on Nick Saban's first staff at Alabama, where he spent one season. From there he joined the Texas staff as assistant head coach / running backs coach and in 2011 he was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in Austin. In 2015 he joined Tom Herman's staff at Houston as offensive coordinator, and then took over as head coach when Herman left for Texas after two seasons.
Saban has added two former head coaches to his support staff this off season, as former Arizona head coach and former Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops joined the program recently as an analyst as well. Stoops and Applewhite join former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones as former head coaches turned Tide analysts for 2019, while former FBS head coaches Steve Sarkisian (USC) and Kyle Flood (Rutgers) are new additions to the on-field coaching staff.
