North Carolina A&T is set to leave the MEAC for the Big South, according to a report Thursday from the Greensboro News & Record.
The move is expected to be announced Friday and will take effect on July 1, 2021, meaning the 2020 season would be the Aggies' last in the MEAC.
North Carolina A&T has been a MEAC member since the league's founding in 1971.
Since 2014, A&T is 59-13 overall and 40-7 in MEAC play with four conference titles under head coaches Rod Broadway and Sam Washington. The Aggies have claimed four Celebration Bowl victories and four Boxtorow national championships, including three consecutive.
A&T will follow the lead of Hampton, who left the MEAC for the Big South in 2017. Hampton went 5-7 overall and 1-5 in Big South play in 2019.
A&T's addition will give the Big South nine football-playing schools. North Alabama is in the process of transitioning from the Division II Gulf South Conference to the Big South.
With the move, North Carolina A&T will become eligible for the FCS playoffs and the FCS national title, something the Aggies have never competed for as a member of the MEAC.
