Steve Addazio was on the fence to return in 2019 after a 7-5 regular season in 2018. A 6-6 season in 2019 was not enough to buy him an eighth season in 2020, as Boston College fired Addazio on Sunday. Yahoo's Pete Thamel first reported the news.
"I made a recommendation to Father Leahy to make a change in the leadership of our football program and he accepted my recommendation," said AD Martin Jarmond. "We thank Steve for his leadership on and off the field in guiding our football program the last seven years. He inherited a program that had a down stretch and led us to six bowl games while recruiting high-character student-athletes that represented BC the right way. Our student-athletes have been pillars of the community and in the classroom and that's a credit to Steve and his staff. We wish Steve and his family well and thank him for his tenure in leading our football program."
Hired in 2013, Addazio went 7-5 or 6-6 in six of his regular seasons, including this one. Overall, he is set to leave Chestnut Hill with a 44-44 overall record and a 22-34 mark in ACC play.
A member of Urban Meyer's national championship staffs at Florida in 2006 and '08, Addazio left Gainesville to take the Temple job in 2011. He went 9-4 in 2011 and 4-7 in 2012 before taking the BC job.
Sensing the inevitable, sources told FootballScoop that Addazio reached out to colleagues to inquire about the Rutgers opening, left open when talks between the Scarlet Knights and Greg Schiano shut down. That door has now slammed shut.
Rich Gunnell will serve as the Eagles' interim head coach. The BC alum coaches the team's wide receivers.
