Houston reportedly has its third cornerbacks coach this month. Hopefully this one sticks.
According to AL.com's Matt Zenitz, the Coogs are set to hire McNeese State defensive coordinator Grady Brown to coach corners.
Brown will replace Jay Valai, who landed in Space City after Tom Herman's staff was released at Texas. Valai's hiring was announced by the university, but undone earlier this week when he left to join the Philadelphia Eagles.
Valai was hired to replace Zac Ethridge, who joined Bryan Harsin's new staff at Auburn.
Brown's departure would create a major hole for Frank Wilson's new staff just days before the Cowboys are set to begin their spring season. McNeese State begins its 7-game spring season next Saturday, Feb. 13, at Tarleton State.
Brown was set to begin his first season at McNeese after spending the bulk of his career at the FBS level. He spent 2019 at Old Dominion, 2018 at Louisville, 2017 at Alabama State and 2012-15 at South Carolina. Brown's McNeese bio lists him as "an up-coming mind and one of the nation’s top recruiters."
At Houston, Brown will attempt to improve a pass defense that rated 90th in efficiency last fall. The Cougars snared just three interceptions in 238 attempts, only UTEP and Vanderbilt secured fewer picks over a similar number of passes.
