USC is working to hire Todd Orlando as its defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports Monday. Pete Thamel was first to report the news.
The move would fill out Clay Helton's coordinator spots, with Graham Harrell remaining in place following interest from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Orlando spent the past three seasons running the defense at Texas, but was not retained after this season. His defense slipped from 37th to 98th nationally in yards per play and from 29th to 65th in scoring defense over his three years in Austin.
Following his ouster in Austin, Orlando accepted a role on Matt Wells's staff at Texas Tech. The pair worked together previously at Utah State.
"My family and I are excited to rejoin Coach Wells," Orlando said earlier this month. "We've won a bunch of games together in the past, and we plan to do the same here at Texas Tech. I'm looking forward to meeting the staff and players and then finishing up on the recruiting trail for the 2020 class."
Orlando would replace Clancy Pendergast, who was not retained after the 2019 season. USC ranked 70th in the nation in yards per play last season.
