Reports: Justin Wilcox hires Tim DeRuyter as Cal defensive coordinator (Featured)

California will hire former Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter to serve as its defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports on Monday.

DeRuyter, of course, most recently worked as the head coach at Fresno State. He compiled a 30-30 record in nearly five full seasons on the job, peaking with a Mountain West title in 2013 and shares of the MW's West Division title in 2012 and '14.

DeRuyter built his name in coaching as a defensive coordinator, coaching in that post at Navy, Ohio, Nevada, Air Force and Texas A&M before leaving for Fresno State. His final season as defensive coordinator in College Station concluded with the Aggies ranking 14th nationally in yards per play allowed and 12th in rushing defense.

At California, DeRuyter would inherit a defense that finished 122nd in yards per play allowed and 127th in scoring en route to a 5-7 final mark.

In an odd note, DeRuyter would move from Fresno to Berkeley while former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford has succeeded him at Fresno State.
