Roger Hughes was tabbed with reviving Stetson Hatters football back in 2011 after a 57-year absence, and now has a new challenge on the horizon.
After a few seasons of recruiting to build their roster base, Steston and Hughes took the field again for the first time in 2013 and went 2-9 before a jump to 5-7 in year two. Just a few seasons later, Hughes led the program to an 8-2 mark in 2018 followed up by a 7-win campaign in 2019.
The Hatters finished 0-4 in their shortened spring season, with two games cancelled due to COVID.
After a coaching career dating back to 1983 that took him from Doane (NAIA - NE) to Nebraska, to UW-Whitewater, to the Ivy League with stops at Dartmouth and Princeton, Hughes is set to turn in his whistle and will be replacing it with a tie.
Hughes, who is one of few college head coaches who hold a PhD, will be taking on a new challenge outside of football as president at his alma mater - Doane University.
Before taking over the Stetson program, Hughes spent nearly a decade leading the football program at Princeton. He went 47-52 in nine seasons in the Ivy League.
He steps away at Stetson with a 31-50 mark, essentially building the program up from scratch.
Please join us in wishing coach Hughes all the best in his latest challenge.
Stetson plans to immediately launch a search for the new head coach, led by deputy athletics director Alicia Queally.
