Rush Propst was already back in Alabama high school football, but now he could be close to the head coach's chair.
Ben Thomas of Alabama Media Group on Thursday reported Pell City is in the process of naming Propst head coach of the 6A program, with a Friday announcement possible. The Panthers went 1-10 overall and 0-6 in 6A Region 6 play in 2022, according to MaxPreps. Pell City is located east of Birmingham.
The school did not return a message seeking comment from FootballScoop.
In January, Propst accepted a position as the associate head coach and athletics director at Coosa Christian in Gadsen, Ala.
The position was Propst's first within Alabama borders in 15 years, the end of a highly successful and controversial 9-year run at Hoover. After playing at Jacksonville State, Propst began coaching in 1989 at Ashville (Ala.), and later took jobs at Eufala, Alba and Alma Bryant.
Propst led Hoover to five Class 6A state championships, including four straight from 2002-05. That success brought fame and infamy to Hoover, highlighted by MTV's Two-A-Days docuseries.
After leaving Hoover at the conclusion of the 2007 season, Propst took the head job at Colquitt County (Ga.), where he remained through 2018. He won Class 6A titles in 2014-15. Propst spent 2020 as the head coach at Valdosta High in Georgia.
Propst's overall career record is 307-95.
