After seven seasons atop the Georgia State football program, five of which resulted in postseason play, Shawn Elliott has stepped down from the program.
Elliott, who led the Panthers to five winning seasons and four bowl victories during his tenure, informed his coaching staff this morning at 8 and followed that up with a team meeting as he shared the news of his voluntary resignation.
A South Carolina native who had a lengthy tenure as a Gamecocks assistant coach that included work as co-offensive coordinator for Steve Spurrier, Elliott is returning to the South Carolina program to become an offensive assistant coach for Shane Beamer, per various reports.
Chris Clark of GamecockCentral reported that Elliott would become the tight ends coach and running game coordinator for the Gamecocks.
Beamer and Elliott had previously discussed a reunion for Elliott with the Gamecocks program, but after Stepp departed for the wideouts job at Illinois, coupled with Beamer's earlier offensive staff moves, this created a natural opening for Elliott to return to the South Carolina program.
Elliott served a half-season stint as the Gamecocks' interim head coach in 2016 after Spurrier retired midway through the season.
South Carolina finished a disappointing 5-7 in 2023 and is set to open a pivotal Year 4 for Beamer Aug. 31 against Old Dominion.
