Sonny Smart, the father of Georgia Bulldogs national championship-winning head coach Kirby Smart and himself a former high school of distinction, has died.
In New Orleans last week in an attempt to see his son's Bulldogs face off against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, Sonny Smart fell and suffered a broken hip that required immediate surgical attention.
However, he was unable to leave the hospital after issues arose in the aftermath of the surgical process.
The University of Georgia issued a statement.
"Sonny fell while walking during the day on New Year's Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip," UGA said in the statement. "He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose.
"He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries."
The 83-year-old Sonny Smart was a former prep coach in both Alabama and Georgia; in Alabama, he even won a state baseball championship.
The Smart family also shared their sentiments via statement.
"They ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day," Georgia's statement continued. "The Smart family treasures everyone's thoughts and prayers and now prays for God's comfort, strength, and guidance."
The entire FootballScoop staff and football community share their condolences and prayers for the Smart family.
